The fair-fish database, formerly known as FishEthoBase, is designed to collect, systematise, and make available (open access) all welfare-related knowledge to be found on food fishes in the wild, in captivity, and during catching in order to help improve fish welfare and avoid practices that harm fishes.

FAQ: "Behind an entry in the WelfareCheck / the Dossier, what does `[x]-[y]´ mean?": In another edition of the FAQ series, we dive into indirect citations: what we mean by that, how we display them, and why we try to avoid them. The Mission

For us, behaviour is the most important indicator of the welfare state of an individual. By describing the behaviour of aquatic animals in the wild and in captivity, we aim to assess the species’ potential on the welfare continuum.

Because we rely on scientific sources, this gives us the reliable, valid, and objective basis for recommendations on how to avoid harm and how to improve welfare.

The goal is to bridge the gap between science and the stakeholders in the aquaculture and fisheries sector: producers, fishing people, certifiers, retailers, NGOs, policy makers, and consumers.

The Cooperations

Testimonials
Testimonial
Benjamin Weis (Group Sustainability Manage at Regal Springs)

«The fair-fish database is a vital platform that allows all people who are interested in aquatic animal welfare to have open access to validated, species-specific knowledge around the animals themselves and aquatic animal welfare. This enables not only students, researchers, and individuals who are working in the aquaculture sector to read up and inform themselves about most up to date research and science, but it also enables people further down the supply chain to do the same. Technical managers and buyers from processors and retailers but also even consumers can find a vast amount of high-quality information. I hope the fair-fish database will continue to be available in the future.»
